You can use LT3652 for your design but it's a bit expensive.
This IC needs a few simple component and works on high voltage range (You can even charge from USB with max 500mA current)
also supports different types batteries, check here http://www.linear.com/product/LT3652

if you want to use another type of battery, you can choose another charger IC with this tool http://www.linear.com/products/battery_charger_ic

for battery packs: http://www.hobbyking.com/

or you can use standart 5xAA rechargable NiMH batteries with 5V(PIC&LCD) and 3.3V(XBee) LDO regulators (feed stepper motor directly from battery with schottky diode)
ofc you have to change your design's power circuit but its gonna be more energy saver, i assume  ???

You recommend me to also integrated MC34063 to keep the voltage of the battery or not necessary.

That type of batteries recommend me. (Li-Ion, NiMH or Li-Poly) say that Li-Poly batteries are dangerous and can explode for my proyect.
